Dr Maria Luisa Padilla is Professor of Medicine and Director of the Advanced Lung Disease/ILD program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, New York. She received her undergraduate degree at the City College of New York and received her medical degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. After completing her training as an intern and resident in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr Padilla pursued a fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine and Basic Science Research in Interstitial Lung Disease, also at Mount Sinai Hospital. She is certified in pulmonary and critical care medicine.

Dr Padilla has investigated and lectured extensively on multiple aspects of pulmonary and critical care medicine. In addition to her clinical research on pulmonary fibrosis, lung transplantation, sarcoidosis, and pulmonary hypertension, she has a very active pulmonary practice and continues to pursue her teaching interests. Dr Padilla is the recipient of several awards, including an Academic Award from National Institutes of Health (NIH), teaching awards, 2000 Physician of the Year Award, the Distinguished Service Award, the Saul Horowitz Jr. Memorial Award, the Alexander Richman Award, and the Jacobi Medallion, all from The Mount Sinai Hospital/The Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Dr Padilla is a fellow graduate of The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine^® (ELAM^®) Program for Women. She was the founding medical director of the program in Lung Transplantation at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. She has been a long time member of the World Association for Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous Diseases (WASOG). She has been an invited speaker at the annual meeting of WASOG, the American College of Chest Physicians, and the American Thoracic Society. Dr Padilla developed a program in Advanced Lung Diseases at the North Shore University Hospital and returned to the Mount Sinai Medical Center to pursue her interest in Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplantation. Dr Padilla has co-authored books on respiratory disorders and is the author or co-author of many publications, presentations, reports, and web-based continuing medical education programs.
